TIMBER FRAMES

The craft of timber framing has been in use for thousands of years, but for only a few centuries in North America. Using larger wood members(usually 6-12” wide) spaced further apart than conventional stick-built frames, timber frames are self supporting structures connected with mortise-and-tenon joinery and many smaller diagonal braces(“knees”). When the timber frame is complete, there is usually no metal, only wood, composing the framework.

Timber frame construction has seen a resurgence in popularity in the last several decades thanks to a handful of inspired individuals who resurrected the craft and the market for a very well built and wonderfully creative homes. While the frames of old houses were often concealed within the walls, contemporary timber frames are usually left exposed to celebrate the strength and craftsmanship of the wood framing. The larger framing members often lead to open floor plans and greater flexibility for the design of the building’s interior.

The timber frame, or “post and beam” as it is often called, is what sets our buildings apart from most others. For those that enjoy the allure and artistry of the exposed wood structure, a timber frame can add beauty and value to any project. Whether you’d like to save money by using one of our pre-designed timber frames to fit your project, or your aspirations call for a custom design, we can work with you to tailor the frame to fit your needs.

We offer the following timber frame services:

  1. Custom timber frame design - We’ll work with you(and your project associates) to devise and design a timber frame thats appropriate for your unique project.

  2. Fabrication and installation - Your timbers are hand-crafted in the shop utilizing specialty tools and machinery, then shipped to the site for assembly and raising.

  3. Building enclosure - We offer full construction services, start to finish as you desire. Options are endless, and include:

    1. Just the frame!

  1. 2. A “weather tight” shell, including windows, insulated walls and a roof with temporary protection from the elements(often roofing underlayment). Timber frames offer great opportunities for superior insulation, usually in the form of Structural Insulated Panels(SIPs) to assemble a highly efficient building envelope. You or your builder can take it from here!

  2. 3. General contracting of any or all phases of your project. We are carpenters, not just timber framers, and enjoy all the craftsmanship that goes into building a home, barn, cottage...any thing you’d like to do!

“Ben and his crew were truly enjoyable to work with. It was obvious that this was much more than just another job to them, it was their passion and art. Thanks to Ben and his crew our barn and timber frame now stands as a testament that craftsmanship is alive and well.”
